YAM Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz

Founding President, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS)

At just 37 years of age, Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin is the Founding President of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) and a newspaper columnist. He was educated at the Kuala Lumpur Alice Smith School, Marlborough College and the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he obtained his BSc in Government and Sociology and MSc in Comparative Politics and Imperial History.

Tunku ‘Abidin worked in a number of London-based think tanks and the Houses of Parliament before moving to Washington DC to join the World Bank as a Public Sector Consultant. Upon returning to Kuala Lumpur in 2008, he worked at the United Nations Development Programme and a regional stakeholder management firm.
He began writing in The Sun in 2008, The Star and Sin Chew Daily in 2011 and is currently writing in the Malay Mail, Oriental Daily and Borneo Post.

The second son of Tuanku Muhriz ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir (now the reigning Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan) and Tuanku Aishah Rohani, Tunku ‘Abidin authored the official book for the Installation of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and also led a major project, working with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra to revitalise the State Anthem.

He is a trustee of Yayasan Chow Kit and Yayasan Munarah, an honorary major in the Malaysian Territorial Army, and a committee member of the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia, the LSE Alumni Society of Malaysia and the Malaysian British Society.
